About

Hi, I’m Clare Lowes, Solicitor (Non-Practising).

After nearly 25 years practising as an SRA-regulated solicitor in England, I retired in 2025. Litigation may have been my day job, but I was always more interested in the bigger picture. I’ve long believed that to be truly effective, a lawyer needs a broad perspective—not just a narrow specialism.

For me, though, the most important skill any lawyer can have is the ability to communicate clearly. If you can’t explain something without slipping into legalese, you’re not really doing your job. After all, how can anyone make a confident, informed decision if they need a dictionary just to understand their options?

Now a non-practising solicitor, I created this blog to share clear, jargon-free, and objective legal insights. I hope you find the content helpful.

As for the name, The Silver Brief, I can’t take credit. It was suggested to me as a nod to my silver hair—a polite way of acknowledging the passing years. I prefer to think it hints at a measure of hard-earned wisdom as well… but I’ll let you be the judge of that!

This content on this blog is based on general principles of English and Welsh law, is intended for informational purposes only, and does not constitute legal advice or establish a professional relationship.
